Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition characterized by abdominal pain and altered bowel movements, constipation or diarrhea or both. This is not to be confused with Inflammatory bowel disease or IBD. IBS is caused by numerous factors including viral infections, stress, changes in the way the intestine moves (altered motility), and changes in the way the intestinal nerves function (hypersensitivity of the nerves).

The FODMAP diet can be used to manage symptoms of IBS. This is not a simple diet to follow, and it is not recommended to start this diet without consulting with a doctor and possibly a dietician as well.
